Joe Flizzow
President
(Kartel)

As Asian hip hop continues on the slow path towards global respectability, one has to wonder when the dam will break. Yet while the scene awaits the arrival of a truly seminal album, Johan Ishak aka Joe Flizzow continues scurrying through the heartland. Malaysia’s rap pioneer has been tirelessly fronting his craft for ten years now, first as part of Too Phat and now on his own, all the while determined to convert those who believe quality rapping cannot exist beyond American shores.

President is best seen as another forward step along that gradual journey. Where Too Phat’s other half Malique chose to tread the socially conscious route on his solo effort OK (and rap almost entirely in Malay), Flizzow mostly sticks to English and revisits the Godfather theme first explored on 2005’s Rebirth Into Reality. And glorious opener ‘President’ gives no reason to do it any other way. A burst of stabbing synths and skittish loops sets the Mafia mood and Flizzow spits with equal dexterity, thumping and thrusting like a Pontiac GTO Convertible on hydraulics sliding down Vegas Strip.

Speaking of Vegas Strip, Pontiacs and all things American–Flizzow has clearly progressed from those early days where Too Phat seemed overly (and perhaps necessarily) preoccupied with trying to “Malaysianise” hip hop–a decade on, Flizzow’s album title and the man’s open-armed, Obama-esque posturing on the cover virtually blares forth his intent to pay shameless nods to the Stars and Stripes. Nationalists might cringe but it’s all for the greater good, since Flizzow’s Westernised flow has noticeably improved. He mucks around with pronunciation and is less reliant on slotting in perfect rhymes to paint his aural picture. There is a recognisable ghetto cool here and Flizzow doesn’t seem to care if such attitude comes with some apple pie.

Alas, it doesn’t take long before President falls victim to the same putrid plights that plague much of hip hop, ie. bland, coma-inducing refrains repeated ad nauseum. ‘Running’ is on such dour example as is the sexless, auto-tuned ‘Bersamamu’. Meanwhile, the KRS-One collabo ‘Get It Done’ is reminiscent of Warren G’s segment on Too Phat’s ‘Just A Lil’ Bit’ back in 2003–cred-building, sure, but more throwaway than anything remotely resembling the New Yorker’s best.

The album’s plodding midsection only lets up on ‘Isabella’, when Flizzow samples that timeless Search-penned classic rock tune to acceptable effect. Nevertheless, the song is a precursor to the album’s flourishing finish. The Phlowtron-accompanied ‘Bergerak’ boasts a sizzling electronic patch and while the BPMs are dialled down on following track ‘Out Of This World’, the bounce clearly isn’t, instead brilliantly elevated by Asian American rapper Jin. And to finish things, Thaitanium give the reggaeton-tinged ‘Do It Big’ some Bangkok brawn. These final three tracks are proof positive that Flizzow still is the hip hop don of South East Asia. That’s hardly the end game for any self-respecting artist from this region, but at least President re-establishes the domain’s original ruler to his priestly throne.

Sigh, its really sad to see/read the truly uninspired (referring to the people above comments with the exception for peter) hammering on joe flizzow as if he's done us all a big injustice.

To 'woman', whoever you are. Lame freakin' commenting on your part. Shame on you. Take your hate and leave it at the door before you go on about someone without context. At least Joe's got some style. Since when was it a crime for anyone to be smart in this business? For you to be bothered by the way his dresses speaks volumes for your otherwise LIMITED KNOWLEDGE of Hip Hop. And "Chinks"???? Come on now! Did anyone pick up on this or is this woman racist as well?

Its good that the album doesn't sound anything like his Too Phat albums, its good that its different, its good that he looks different, its good that Joe is challenging us to listen to something different. So what about the plethora of collaborations he's got on the album? So fuckin what? Isn't that what its all about? Working together, making music together? I wish more people would get out of their insular world and do more collaborations. Maybe that's why local music isn't growing!

Its time we stop and truly appreciate the work that's been put in this album and truly applaud Joe for having his own vision about what his music should be about and challenging us to re-think what kind of music he should be doing instead. I found this album placed in the international section at speedy video and thought to myself, hey, this guy has got them thinking he's an international act! Good one!

Joe Flizzow, you've done well, its great to see you come into your own and I look forward to hearing more from you. Good luck.

Wey Joe, kalau lu bole dengarlah kan. Ni opinion ikhlas wa ni. Aku sebenarnya anticipated nak dengar work ko. Ok....Lagu 1st tu sebenarya cun! lagu Do it tu pun chun...wa paling suka lu blend in perkataan melayu! Fucking genius! Honestly man! Tapi kan Joe, wa tak bole belah lagu Isabella. Wa tau tu sebenarnya cam ploy untuk radio air play, betul tak? Tapi honestly la bro, it doesn't work, and it's sounds kind of cheap. The sound of the album is good! Aku dengar dengan monitor hs-50. Tak ada lah world class quality tapi good enuff man! Tapi beats and electronic dia cam ketinggalan zaman sikit (Sorry, no offense) komen ikhlas... Well, maybe you meant it that way, and I know a lot of hip hop artist suka sound cam tu. Tapi wa rasa lu dah capable to go alone and u boleh pergi jauh! Seriously man, tapi seems like something is definitely missing in this album. I guess, I was hoping to feel more or less of the same way that you made me feel when I listen to Too Phat.

im sorry, this was a horrible album. i still believe in good hip hop, and am still thankful too too phat for what they did for hip hop in our country, but come on, its time to stop copying other international artists.

joe, stop trying so hard to get a hit using 'popular' sounds and styles, stop trying so hard with that suit of yours, and stop trying so hard to get a star studded guest list on your albums. krs one's song is probably the worst in krs one's ever done in terms of content; jin, what can i say, after his freestyle fridays days were over, he became just another novelty, like oh wow chink rapper, big deal; hady mirza, well, this is probably the most exciting song in his career, so nice work, hady.

most of the songs sounded like it came straight from lil wayne's album. shame. joe got the skillz, and i respect the man, but he should try a different sound on the next album. this one sounds like every other trendy mainstream US hiphop goin on radio now. come on man, do your own thang!
