Young
Love.Soul.Desire
(NVMBR CHLD)
If Singapore’s hip hop scene were a family, then Young (aka Naufal) is the distant cousin we never knew existed, but wish we met way earlier. On his debut Love.Soul.Desire, the rapper treads through the Eminem-worshipping room with grimy boots and middle-fingered assurance. The album’s crevices are layered with grit and gloom, as in the skittering ‘I Tried’ or the sneering mantras of ‘The Movement’ and ‘Boom Rap’. Young is not quite the finished product–his rhymes can sag into trite territory, and Love’s skinny beats lack the stamina to underpin a full-length–but there is enough here to envision an exhilarating future.
