Studied oddite Graham Coxon, formerly of Blur, admitted he wanted to jump out of a window when Blur’s ‘Country House’ edged out Oasis’ ‘Roll With It’ to reach #1 in the UK singles’ charts way back when.
Coxon said that Britpop was a "grotesque travesty" that had more to do with media-generated rivalries, often at the expense of the music itself. Upon learning that ‘Country House’ had reached #1, Blur’s record company threw them a big champagne party, which Coxon apparently did not enjoy. ‘I felt I was being forced into enjoying the moment and I just wanted to be alone really,’ said the guitarist, who recently worked with Babyshambles’ Pete(r) Doherty on the latter’s Grace/Wastelands.
And so, as most sensible people do when their life’s work is being celebrated, Coxon decided to jump out of the sixth-storey window, and was saved only by Blur frontman Damon Albarn. ‘It was Damon who talked me out of it. Looking back, I should have enjoyed myself a lot more than I did during the Blur days,’ he said.
But all is not fine and dandy for Coxon just yet. He admitted his tendency to "stay in the studio for weeks without food or sleep," which somewhat amazingly, Doherty helped to cure him of by bringing "structure to his day".
Coxon said of Doherty: ‘I think Pete is coming out of his darkest times now, but you never know. I thought I'd got my problems sorted when I stopped drinking. I felt brilliant and was so healthy but I wasn't right still."
Aww. The poor baby.
