Our first ever Lo-fideo went off pretty well with Malaysian duo Sorry amassing the most votes from Junk readers, while runners-up Khottal and Alaling & The Kaya Koks have been doing well for themselves at gigs around the city. (In fact, both groups are currently on the Junk's Voter's Choice to perform at Urbanscapes; vote for them here!)
Votes are already in for our three shortlisted contenders–Bite Me Butterfly and The Wongs from Malaysia, and Denial from Indonesia–for Cycle #2 of our Lo-fideo video competion. This week, we speak to frontgirl Najlaa of indie rockers Bite Me Butterfly to get their feelings on being nominated...
Give us a background on Bite Me Butterfly.
Well, at the beginning Nik (the second guitarist) was gathering everyone to form a band. We all didn't know each other at that time, but Didi (the main guitarist) and him were friends from before. Nik's cousin then suggested that he try asking me to be the vocalist, and of course when I received the call I didn't have much hesitation in joining the band as I always wanted to form one myself. Hazim (the drummer) came along when Shakir (one of Nik's friends) introduced him to the band. Lastly, Ike (the bassist) was asked if he wanted to be in a band and he was up for it.
What are you guys up to now?
[We just performed] for Fly Fm's Campur Chart Goes Live concert on 14 May at Laundry Bar. We're very thankful for that; it was an extreme fluke but somehow we got through.
How did your band persona come about?
Our band expresses feelings through the music. Be it good, bad, funny or sad, it's just something that comes out automatically. The persona of our band comes from each of us separately, then combined to become BMB. It's kind of funny because we all have our own interests in [different] sounds, yet somehow we're still able to click and agree on what comes out from each of us. We're all different, but our chemistry makes it happen.
What's the story behind your Lo-fideo?
The video was from a performance we had not that long ago, and I came across [the Lo-fideo] site and video competition. So I decided to just give it a try, and then boom, we're here! The song 'Trust' was written by a couple of us, and it's about holding on to someone emotionally but getting hurt in the end.
What does the future evidently hold for Bite Me Butterfly if you win Junk's Lo-fideo Competition?
Hopefully it'll give us more exposure, more opportunities and more experience. We're still new, you know? So getting support is highly needed. But I would like to thank [Lo-fideo] for giving us the opportunity and for putting us as one of the top three finalists. We're thrilled, and we're patiently waiting to see what happens.
