Previous editions of Heineken Music Presents Impulse: A Junk Music Project were of the roof-raising, or even the roof-razing sort. But the latest Impulse held in Laundry at the Curve, Petaling Jaya was an onslaught of a different kind altogether: this one had you nestled in your couch, senses awash with the sheer style of the whole affair.
It’s all well and fine to actively court fun and dance like you’re possessed, but every now and again you have to sit back, go all Cleopatra-like and let art be brought to you. And brought to us it was. DJ Paco aka BananaRepublic got us going with his groovy beats that just stopped short of Dionysian rapture.
When Alwyn Chua and Insight Visuals collabo got in full swing, you knew you were in the presence of something magical. Alwyn’s draped mannequins served as the perfect template for Insight Visuals’ hypnotic imagery, with the white-draped neutrality of the former perfectly offset by the moodily psychedelic colours of the latter.
Soon after, the stylish electro outfit from Manila, Techy Romantics took to the stage. Their set managed to be sultry and angelic at the same time; but perhaps more impressively, the Techy Romantics’ sound and Camyl Besinga’s captivating presence managed to complement the visual showpiece so well, that the experience formed an organic whole.
Then up-and-coming DJ Gaijin ushered the night to a close with his thumping, but never garish beats. All in all, it was the perfect chilled-out come down after the maddening chaos of the previous editions of the series: more class than blast.
