Adopting the aural disdain of In Utero’s louder bits, the debut EP from Malaysian garage beasts DengDeng_ETC benefits greatly from its Chinese medium. Vocalist Hoong’s slacker drawl, when not in screaming mode, would arguably fall flat in any other language; and thinly-veiled sociopolitical contempt can be spewed forth with relative safety from governmental reprisal (if ‘Our Fucking Day Dream’ was sung in any other language, shit would indeed be hitting the fan). Beyond the grit and political commentary, however, there is one glaring flaw: none of the songs, except maybe ‘Brain Overthrow’, are really very memorable.
