Nice guys can finish last, especially in this fickle world of rock ‘n’ roll. In the case of Highrise–a Singapore band I’d never heard of before until I met one of the members at a gig in the Lion City in March–it’d be an atrocity if that were to happen to them. A startlingly romantic, heart-on-sleeve collection of pop songs, Stories boasts of one of the most achingly lovely songs I’ve ever heard from this region in ‘Airily’. Sounding like Malaysian twee heroes Ferns playing Coldplay and Keane songs, this is one pure and unexpected pleasure. More please!
