A marked departure from their first EP Sonik Di Atas Langit, Daily Flavoured Tunes have now gone totally epic and ambitious. Calling to mind the grandiose Britpop of bands like Elbow and a little bit of Coldplay, spiced with some traditional Malay melodies not unlike Butterfingers when they’re trying to go for that whole “serious epic” thing (especially on second song ‘Pungguk Hitam’), this is something totally rare in the Malaysian music scene. Song after song you’re served with good, memorable melodies married with big sounding, expansive arrangements–we might finally have here a Malaysian band unafraid to make big musical statements, yet still within a palatable pop rock package. And all this without sounding like they’re merely aping their Indonesian counterparts.
