Somewhere in the mid-90s, people often wondered whether there’s something in the water in the state of Kuching in East Malaysia–a reaction to the unusually high number of good indie pop bands popping out of that city. With this debut album by The Hans and a few others in the works, is Ipoh planning a takeover? Veering more towards Swedish and twee pop, this sounds like the album that we all hoped would be Nice Stupid Playground’s second album, instead of the actual one they delivered. Special mention must go to Subha’s marvellous guitar work; so good that I wish he was in my band!
