Malaysian DJ and producer Mailer Daemon has just unleashed his very own EP, titled Black Gallant. The man behind the moniker is Penangite Sina Djavadkhani, who is best remembered for his stint as a member of post rock supremos Damn Dirty Apes.
Now based in Sydney, he’s been crafting music Down Under since 2001; Black Gallant is the result of his musical pursuits, a five-track EP featuring a mix of hip hop, electro and South East Asian sounds complimented by collaborations with Australian acts like Peach, Catcall, Vangarde, Kobra Kai and Malaysia’s Damn Dirty Apes. “I believe I have my own sound. I think that's important for an artist: to be genuinely comfortable and confident that you are your own entity,” Sina muses. “I definitely would like to reach out to a more Persian palette ... sampling old, pre-revolution, Iranian 70s records from some old dusty archive or going on an Asian tip with early Jackie Chan movies (I'm a big fan of the Police Story saga).”Black Gallant also happens to be the name of Sina’s sound company that specialises in audio production and sound design.
‘Bad Move Baby’ featuring Australian pop singer Catcall is already making its rounds on Aussie radio station Triple J. As a musician in this digital age, Mailer Daemon believes in getting his music heard by as many people as possible, thus his decision to give his EP away for free. “At this stage of my career, the priority is to get the name out there and showcase my skills,” he explains. “People can download Black Gallant for free at 198kpbs and donate money for the 320kbps version. Heck, I don't even buy music anymore; I just buy PS3 games!” Besides the free download available on Mailer Daemon’s website (www.blackgallant.com), the Black Gallant EP is also available via iTunes, Emusic.com and Amazon, and as a limited edition vinyl.
Currently busy playing gigs around Sydney to promote his EP, Mailer Daemon plans to rock Kuala Lumpur when he returns to Malaysia in December. He’s also looking to collaborate with Malaysian artists, so those interested are welcome to hit him up! In the meantime, you can check his track ‘Keep On Movin’ featuring Peach on the Junk Music Compilation this month.
