Scene At The Movies comprises three not-so-terrible looking guys from Malaysia. Brothers Dharen (guitar) and Rohan (bass) have that Madden twins’ synchronicity on vocals.
And making up for the lack of familial link, drummer David shows off with his tight chops. Together they’ve released a four-track eponymous EP, which was mixed and recorded by fellow Malaysian rock scenester, JD from Pop Shuvit. The EP opens with “Fall”, a strong fast opener filled with crunchy guitars and pounding basslines. Immediately it sets the tone for Scene’s EP and overall catchy sound; riff-based pop punk tunes with smooth vocals. The next track that follows is their debut single, “Sunsets + Sketches”, a song describing the euphoria of being in love. Though not a great song (due to its cliché lyrics), it’s radio friendly with its ‘80s keyboard riff and guitar reverbs. “Hymn For The Romantic” showcases Dharen and Rohan’s solid and clear vocals with the instruments swelling at just the right moments. Closing track "Godspeed" starts off acoustic that goes into a riff-happy trance which sounds a bit overdone. Though it’s hard to overlook the pinched lyric "What you feel is what you are/ And what you are is beautiful" from Goo Goo Dolls, the EP is radio-friendly enough and very well-produced.3 stars
