SUPA (Super Unique Producers Around) has produced, arranged and written music for a number of Malaysian artists and bands such as James Baum, Throne Away, Deja Voodoo Spells and Broken Scar, among others. Music veterans in their own right, Alda, Francis and Sel join forces and influences to come up with a sound that's all their own. We speak to them prior to their gig this Friday.
Can you please give a brief 411 on SUPA?
SUPA was conceived in late 2007 by three producers, Alda, Francis and Sel. We came together realising that we all come from different backgrounds, combining different genres to make the sound that we produce. None of us really had an r ‘n’ b or hip hop background; we were more influenced by rock, funky jazz and trance. Initially we mostly produced for other artists, so we thought of forming a group featuring different artists on each song, which we felt would give their own individual characters in each song. And that’s why we call it unique.
Your music sounds like a bit of everything. How would you best describe it?
In order to understand our music, it’s best to understand the people behind it. Francis comes from a trance DJ background, Sel comes from a rock and blues band, and Alda from a jazz, funk and rock background. We merge all this with a general electronic feel and some mainstream pop.
Are there any artists that you guys would like to collaborate with?
Alda I would die to work with Prince and if James Brown was still alive, he would be another one. Locally, having worked with Dina was incredible. She is such an amazing singer and a really great person to just lepak (hang out) with! Haha. We’d do it again, no problem! (Note: we worked on her upcoming album Dua.)
Francis Siti Nurhaliza would be one local artist that we all would be most privileged to work with.
SUPA is an acronym for Supa Unique Producers Around. So who else do you think is "SUPA"?
Alda Internationally, I think Patrick Stump’s work with Fall Out Boy is SUPA! Punk rock energy + jazz chord progressions = incredible melodies. Also NERD is extremely cool!
