Ah, mums. Can we not love them? Even when they nag us, tell us we eat too much or cluck their tongues at our new iPod, we still appreciate mummy more than Kings of Leon. Em, yeah, that’s about right.
Features
As Mother’s Day falls on 10 May, we thought it only right to thank mum for giving birth to us, enduring 18 hours of labour pain for us and spending another 18 or so years putting up with all our sh*t. We got five regional music makers to express their love to their music-loving matrons of steel in our feature. We also prepare you for the ultimate electro house party of the summer in Malaysia, headlined by Junk cover star Steve Aoki with his Dim Mak cohorts for U.O.X. Play Future. There are also exclusives with Korn, Peter Bjorn and John, Lily Allen, Indonesia's Pee Wee Gaskins, Singapore's I Am David Sparkle and our Buzzed artists of the month, The Ambassadors from the Philippines.
Open Mic
Gene Kasidit talks about life after Futon, Malaysian indie hopefuls Lovesick Avenue champion heart songs while Matematik seems like local music's perfect equation. Malaysian metal band Incarnatiion gets our hair standing and we find out Channel [V] host Nicholas Saputra loves karaoke. Rudi of Singapore's A Vacant Affair gives us the lowdown on Perth's Soundwave festival and we also find out what Indonesian design team SCANDAL have been up to.
Reviews
We review Killeur Calculateur's smashingly super short EP and albums by MSTRKRFT, Starsailor and (MF) Doom. We also detail the mayhem at Malaysian music fest Sunburst KL with a two-page spread of words and pics. We also give first-hand accounts of our trip to the Philippines for the Junksounds 2008 Regional Music Awards Night as well as KL gigs like Battles, Misery Signals and Jamiroquai for the recent F1.
Junk Music Compilation
We cross over to our fave "fragrant harbour" aka Hong Kong for Junk's May compilation. And our chosen curator happens to be none other than Chris B, founder and organiser of The Underground live music showcase in Hong Kong. Check out Chris B's playlist featuring some of Hong Kong's finest via our online player.
