Yuna, Zee Avi and Hunny Madu - it's our 'Girl Issue'! Uhuh, this month Junk is all about the girls! And we know you likey that subject. Just look at our gorgeous (and quirky) cover stars, who have each carved a name for themselves as singer-songwriters in their own right. Read all about Yuna, Zee Avi and Hunny Madu, our Buzzed stars of the month from Malaysia on page 40.
We also talk girls in our feature on all-girl bands in Asia (Grrlz + Guitars, page 44). From trailblazers like Japan’s Shonen Knife to new breeds like Hong Kong’s Guitars and Panties (sometimes they wear them), these girls sure know how to rock. (Special mention should go out to MFX Pictures, who did a smashing job of the illustrations for our feature!) Our Junk music compilation (page 12) also sees the female of the species taking over, with some super sounds from the region–including tracks by Yuna, Zee and Hunny. Go listen!
Reviews
We review The Horror's latest offering Primary Colours and albums by Art Brut, Empire Of The Sun and Jazmine Sullivan. We drop in on Malaysian rock legends Search on their almost-final hurrah in Penang. We witness Indonesian rockers, Alexa rock out for their Malaysian fans and music veterans Butterfingers perform one last time at Istana Budaya to a sell-out crowd and scenes from Hennesy Artistry and Speedzone. Also find out what went down in Singapore when Kaiser Chiefs, and Dragonforce took over the Lion City.
